Subject:

The Bank is scheduled to issue a new series of New Taiwan Dollar notes in the denomination of NT$1,000 and NT$500 (new banknotes)on July 20, 2005.

Basis:

Article 13, 15 and 18 of the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Act, the Regulations Governing the Issuance of New Taiwan Dollars by the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan), and the Executive Yuan directive:Yuan Tai Tsai No. 0930032086 dated July 19, 2004.

Public:

1.The design and specifications of the new banknotes are summarized as follows:

A.NT$1,000 notes:

a.Denomination: NT$500

b.Dimensions: 155mm×70mm

c.Substrate: Paper

d.Main color: Dark brown.

e.Design:

(i)Obverse: The motif is the image of a group of baseball players. The intaglio printing reads “The Republic of China”, “The Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan)”, “Five Hundred Dollars” and “500”.

(ii)Reverse: The main picture shows a herd of Formosan Sika Deer. Mount Dabajian and bamboos form the background.

B.NT$500 notes:

2.The new NT$1,000 and NT$500 notes both have an optical variable device stripe in the right side on the front, an optical variable device window thread on the back, and the figure of denomination in the upper left corner on the back is printed with optical variable ink.

3. The engraving of the new banknotes was made in 2004, and the notes are printed by the Central Engraving and Printing Plant.

4.The new banknotes shall be circulated in Taiwan, Kinmen and Matsu regions concurrently.

5.The current NT$1,000 and NT$500 banknotes shall remain in circulation but withdrawn from circulation gradually from this date until July 31, 2007. Current banknotes shall cease to be legal tender from August 1, 2007. However, they can still be exchanged at any branch of the Bank of Taiwan within the territories.
